Stonework in Liapades, Corfu

Liapades sits back from the west coast, above the coves at Rovinia and Limni, a village of olive terraces, cypress and old stone, looking out toward Paleokastritsa. The work here leans architectural: arches, loggias, dressed openings and quoined corners cut from Sinies limestone, where a building wants character rather than just enclosure.

The slope and the older fabric set the register. Houses are stepped into terraces, walls carry real load, and a loggia or veranda is often the room people actually live in. That is where a true arch earns its place, voussoirs hand-cut and tapered so the ring carries itself in compression, springing off a clean quoined pier, no steel lintel hidden in the wall doing the work for it. Sinies limestone from Mount Pantokrator takes that cutting and keeps a warm face in the strong west light.

A hand-cut arch is the clearest example of what custom stonework means here: each voussoir dressed by hand, the ring set to read as one span, geometry first, then the chisel, then the joint. From the same yard come dressed door and window surrounds, coping, and the quoins that tie a stone-faced wall together at the corner.

Because so much of Liapades is older fabric, restoration and structural walling sit close to the custom work. We point and rebuild in lime mortar, which breathes where cement traps damp behind a stone face, and we rebuild the dry-stone terracing, xerolithia, that holds the olive slopes. New arch, repaired Venetian-era opening, or a retaining wall battered back into the hill: the aim is the same, stone that looks like it was always meant to be there.
